Deconstruction of digital camera – the starting point and journey of SIGMA fp L
SIGMA has been questioning the genuine value of a digital camera and how can we break down manufacturer’s ideas of camera-centric hierarchies and categories.
Deconstruction is our answer after rethinking what is essential to the users. We believe a camera should be more than a tool for fulfilling rational needs of photography making, but enriching life as your inspiration. Therefore, “how can SIGMA be the one to make this happen?”
As the answer to this question, SIGMA set itself to develop a user-oriented digital camera that reflected the idea of “how a camera can be” in a more flexible and true-to-life manner.
A camera that keeps the heart of photography. As a result, the SIGMA fp L is the new form of camera that lets creativity get in. Because SIGMA believes keeping the essence is the key to genuinely realize the idea of giving freedom back to you.

Leveraging our knowhow of image processing technology on Foveon sensors.
Thanks to the ultra-high resolution, Sigma fp L is able to unleash your imagination and feature a low-pass filter to make a further contribution to the optical performance.
The Sigma fp L features a Bayer sensor with approximately 61 effective megapixels, higher than any other Sigma camera before it. In addition to images with fine details, the fp L is capable of creating images that are high-definition and rich in color, thanks to its ultra-high pixel count and Sigma’s experience in developing cameras with a Foveon sensor, are renowned for both the exceptional resolving power and nuanced color gradients due to the unique nature of the X3 sensor. Furthermore, for its image quality that are in principle free of color artifacts, the Foveon sensor legacy was also behind the decision that the fp L should have a low-pass filter to reduce moiré to minimum levels. The use of a low-pass filter was a choice that made sense for a camera with an ample megapixels such as the Sigma fp L.
Crop Zoom
A high pixel count means that images can stand extreme zooming or cropping. This was one aspect of an ultra-high pixel camera that led Sigma to give the fp L a cropped zoom feature that works in both the STILL and CINE modes. Thanks to its ample (approximately 61 effective) megapixels, the fp L can record in full HD quality even at its maximum 5x zoom; because this is accomplished simply by cropping with no digital enhancement, the image quality will not suffer. To use it in a more intuitive way, you can pinch to zoom on the LCD touch screen.
Hybrid Autofocus
Contrast detection autofocus + Phase detection autofocus
In addition to high-precision contrast AF, the Sigma fp L features fast image area phase-detection AF. This hybrid AF allows users to enjoy smooth autofocus that is high-precision, fast, and excellent at tracking a moving subject, whether they are shooting stills or video.
Long hours of worry-free USB-C cable power supply
The Sigma fp L supports USB charging while the camera is on. You can shoot without interruption while charging the camera using a mobile battery, even outdoors or where you have no access to a power outlet. When using it as a webcam, just connect the fp L to a PC via USB and it works as an audio and video input device while getting its power supply from the PC. This means that you can use it for long hours without having to worry about the battery dying on you.
The world’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera.*
With overall dimension of 112.6 x 69.9 x 45.3mm and body weight of 370g and 375g for the fp and the fp L, respectively, the Sigma fp family is the world’s smallest and lightest* full-frame mirrorless cameras. They are small enough to take for casual use, so you can enjoy the full-frame image quality for your everyday snaps.
*As of March 2021, by Sigma
L-Mount lenses.
The Sigma fp series uses the L-Mount*, characterized by a short flange focal length, large diameter, and superior durability. For interchangeable lenses, in addition to the wide-ranging choice of Sigma lenses, other manufacturers’ lenses can also be an option through the L-Mount Alliance with Leica Camera AG and Panasonic Corporation. With the Sigma MOUNT CONVERTER MC-21, Sigma SA mount and Sigma’s CANON EF mount lenses can be used, making the best out of one’s lens investment.
*The L-Mount Trademark is a registered Trademark of Leica Camera AG.
Supporting 12bit CinemaDNG recording
Supporting Blackmagic RAW and ProRes RAW HDMI outputs as standard
Professional video interface
For raw video data, the Sigma fp series supports 12-bit CinemaDNG external recording. With 4K UHD/24fps recording, it produces video data that can be used even in filmmaking. It also supports Blackmagic RAW and ProRes RAW over HDMI recording, so you can choose one according to your workflow.
For the operation system, the Sigma fp series features a dedicated interface that supports commonly used cinema cameras, which means it can be taken straight to video production settings.
Dust and Splash Resistant Structure* / Large Heat Sink
A body covered with die-cast aluminum on the front and the back ensures superior robustness and heat dissipation while keeping the body weight light.
The Sigma fp series is protected with the dust and splash resistant sealing on a total of 42 points over the camera body. Combined with a large-size magnesium heat sink that prevents overheating, the Sigma fp series is a reliable choice for shooting in a wide range of conditions as well as long hours of use.
*Although this construction allows the lens to be used in light rain, it is not the same as being waterproof.
Full-time electronic shutter
Shutter shock, sound, and lags: these are disadvantages of mechanical shutters. The Sigma fp series is designed to minimize them in pursuit of a system to adapt to a variety of different shooting scenes. Shooting that requires precision where even the tiniest shake is to be eliminated; shooting in a sound-sensitive situation; shooting without ruining the ambience of the scene; and shooting with good response without missing the perfect shot. These types of shooting will open new horizons in video creation. Furthermore, the absence of a mechanical shutter makes the Sigma fp’s camera structure simpler, which in turn improves its reliability as a camera.
Cinemagraph / Fill Light / Color mode
In addition to a total of 15 color modes to choose from, the Sigma fp series features a number of functionalities such as Cinemagraph, which is animated GIF that is a hybrid between photography and video, and Fill Light, which is Sigma’s special light control function. These features specially created for the Sigma fp series will help you find your own style.
